Even Marvel comic super-villain dies of asbestos disease

Today a friend sent me a link to a bizarre news item from TIME magazine online that lists one of the “Top 10 Oddest Marvel Characters” as The Asbestos Lady. According to the news article, the character first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1947, in a Captain America comic.
The villain was a chemist who created fireproof asbestos clothing for herself and her henchmen. They would then set fires and rob banks. Her nemesis was the Human Torch, and she created asbestos bullets to puncture his defenses.
One of the oddest parts of the story is that apparently when the health hazards of asbestos exposure became more widely know, the comic chose to have The Asbestos Lady herself succumb to asbestos disease. TIME reports the character was revealed to have cancer in 1990.
This is probably one of the weirdest things I’ve ever come across in relation to mesothelioma and asbestos disease.
