EPA logo 100x100 Alleged asbestos dumping crime in Mass. under investigation by EPABrady Sullivan-owned in Lawrence, Mass., is now under investigation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) after the company was believed to have been responsible for dumping toxic sandblasting grit that tested at 70 percent .

According to New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR), a number of emails were exchanged last September between several New Hampshire officials, Massachusetts environmental officials and the EPA regarding what was referred to as the “black beauty” sandblast grit. The emails also stated that 10 truckloads of the asbestos-tainted grit had been deposited in the basement cement of the Mill West Properties building, as well as in several piles outside.

Each year, approximately 3,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare cancer brought about by asbestos exposure. Between the 1940s and 1970s, asbestos was utilized frequently in building materials such as floor tiles, shingles and ceiling plaster for fire protection, and in insulation. While stable, asbestos technically does not pose a health risk, but if deteriorated or tampered with, such during a renovation, asbestos becomes airborne and microscopic particles can be inhaled or ingested.

Brady Sullivan released a statement regarding the allegations, saying the company leases a portion of the complex:

“Brady Sullivan has performed an initial investigation regarding the allegations contained in the NHPR report. As of this time, we are highly confident that Brady Sullivan has engaged in no wrongdoing, or illegal activity, at the Pacific Mills project in Lawrence, Mass.,” the company said in its email to the Union Leader earlier this week.

When the Union Leader reached out to the EPA regarding its probe on Brady Sullivan and the Mill West Properties, it responded it “does not comment on or discuss ongoing investigations. We’ll be sure to get you anything if/when we have something.”
