construction worker 100x100 Many construction workers dont know asbestos is dangerousOne in four construction workers claims to have been exposed to , and two-thirds said they did not know asbestos exposure can cause cancer, according to research conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Most respondents to the study said they wouldn’t know what to do if they discovered asbestos at a worksite.

Areas where asbestos exposure is the greatest include construction and ship repair environments. But the risk is also prevalent for workers in plants that manufacture asbestos products, such as textiles, friction products, insulation and other building materials, as well as during automotive brake and clutch repair.

Asbestos is a mineral that contains microscopic fibers that can lodge in the lungs if inhaled or swallowed. Exposure to asbestos has been linked to serious illnesses including the incurable lung disease asbestosis, lung cancer and , a type of cancer that forms in the lining of internal organs, including the lungs or abdomen. It can take decades for asbestos-related diseases to develop. Most people who develop die within 12 to 24 months of diagnosis.

The fact that so few construction workers polled for the OSHA study understand the risks of asbestos points to the continuing knowledge gap between safety managers and construction teams. Workers who are at risk of becoming exposed to asbestos should be provided with protective gear in order to protect themselves as well as others they come in contact with.
