Established in 2004, this awareness day, established and promoted by the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation ( Foundation), has been the driving force behind the movement to bring attention and funding to mesothelioma research. In the past ten years, National Mesothelioma Awareness Day has raised nearly $1 million, received numerous local, state, and national government proclamations, and been the focus of dozens of media stories. Fire 100x100 Asbestos abatement continues after fire on historic Front Street in South CarolinaRubble resulting from a Sept. 25 fire that leveled Colonial Floral Fascinations in Georgetown County, S.C., is undergoing a third inspection before clean-up work on the site can begin. The “Peace. Joy. CURE.” campaign began Nov. 25 and will run through Dec. 31. A long-time donor will match every dollar donated through the online drive, up to $10,000.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos that affects approximately 3,500 people each year. It most commonly affects the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma) or abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma). It can also sometimes affect the lining of the heart (pericardial mesothelioma). There is no known cure for mesothelioma.

The Meso Foundation is the only nonprofit organization dedicated to ending meso, primarily by providing funding for research. To date, the Foundation has funded $8.2 million in mesothelioma research. The Meso Foundation also provides a strong support network for “” – those battling mesothelioma – and their families and caregivers, as well as spearheading education and advocacy efforts.

More than 600 people are helped each month by the Meso Foundation, and 81 cents of every dollar given to the Foundation goes directly to programs.
