For nearly three years, an area near Western Australia’s Goldfields Pipeline, one of the longest fresh water pipelines in the world, has been quarantined due to ongoing asbestos contamination, but the state’s Water Corporation recently announced the asbestos-contaminated area at one of the pipeline’s pump stations poses no threat to the public water supply. Oroville dam aerial1 100x100 Asbestos found at Oroville Dam siteCalifornia’s damaged Oroville Dam faces another hurdle in its repair after air-quality control tests revealed the presence of naturally occurring asbestos.

The California Department of Water Resources said Thursday that authorities found the asbestos in what it said were limited areas of the site, according to the Associated Press. Crews are currently working to remove what remains of the more than 1.7 million cubic-yards of debris that accumulated at the bottom of the spillway last month after a large part of it failed.

Exposure to asbestos is linked to serious illnesses, including mesothelioma, a rare and deadly form of cancer. When job site officials identified asbestos in the soil, the construction project had to be stopped until the hazardous material could be contained, properly disposed of, and the site cleaned and deemed safe for workers and the public. Charges included conspiracy to violate the Clean Water Act and Superfund Statute, and to defraud the United States.
