Donald Torriero was sentenced to three years in prison and Julius DeSimone was sentenced to five years of probation. Additionally, the men were ordered to pay a fine of close to $500,000 in restitution.

In June, a federal court in Utica, N.Y., sentenced Mazza & Sons Inc. and its owner , along with property owner Cross Nicastro, with illegally dumping thousands of tons of asbestos-contaminated construction debris on wetlands property adjacent to the Mohawk River.

Mazza & Sons was a solid-waste disposal company. The scheme involved dumping construction and demolition debris from New Jersey using forged permits from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), as well as forging the name of a DEC official on the permits.

It is estimated about 400 truckloads of asbestos-contaminated waste was dumped on 28 acres of wetlands property before the scheme was discovered and stopped.
