borit superfund site signage1 100x100 BoRit Superfund cleanup comes to an endA 30-year Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) project to remediate an asbestos-tainted former manufacturing site in Ambler, , came to an end at the beginning of this month.

An asbestos disposal site for nearly a century, the 38-acre BoRit Asbestos Site in Ambler has been undergoing cleanup since the 1980s. It was included as an EPA Superfund site in 2008 after tests showed high levels of asbestos were still present despite abatement efforts, according to NewsWorks. In January, MyMeso reported the EPA released long-term remediation plans, and those plans are now complete. (more…)

The 38-acre BoRit site was included as part of the EPA’s Superfund Program, which provides federal funding for remediation, eight years ago, and last month the agency released its proposed long-term remedy for the site—open to public comment through March 3. asbestos warning 100x100 School District in Pennsylvania accused of burying asbestos near elementary schoolThe Board of the East Penn School District in Lehigh County, Penn., is disputing charges that the district violated environmental laws by burying construction waste containing a cancer-causing carcinogen, . In the summer of 2013, several dump-truck loads of construction debris were discarded in an area of woods just west of Wescosville in Lower Macungie Township. School officials are claiming that they do not know who dumped the debris near their property, but after the pile was discovered, they authorized the burial of the debris in a clay-lined pit on the same site.
